Overview

The Feeding Each Other campaign builds on recent successful food drives in Oakville by establishing a quarterly food donation system to supply the city’s three main food banks. In collaboration with local partners, and with the help of over 300 dedicated volunteers, Feeding Each Other will create a sustainable community-driven contribution mechanism. Every quarter, volunteer teams will drop off empty collection bags with donation information pamphlets to homes in Oakville's three wards. A few days later, volunteers will return to pick up food donations, sort the donated food and deliver items to the city's three food banks. This process, repeated 4 times per year, will be supported by an awareness-raising campaign that uses social and traditional media to highlight the need for food banks in Oakville. The online and hand-distributed content will also provide information on how to contribute financially.

Community Benefit

Feeding Each Other goes beyond simply stocking the shelves at Oakville's food banks. By having a constant supply of non-perishable items at each centre, food banks will be able to reliably support more than 1000 families who rely on this vital assistance. The three recipient food banks will benefit from a coordinated donation and distribution system, effectively forming a network of social service providers that extends their reach. Volunteers will gain valuable community service experience while engaging their neighbours to address an issue with local significance. Through their informed support, Oakville residents will help build a food bank donation mechanism with tangible results and a strong potential for replication to other Oakville-area neighbourhoods. Finally, the partnership elements and community involvement behind this project will contribute to a sense of local ownership among everyone participating in the campaign, thereby ensuring its long-term sustainability.
