Overview
The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board has over 18 schools designated as high needs/compensatory education schools that span across the city. These schools require a great deal of additional supports to assist students in coming to school, prepared to learn. The approximate student population for compensatory education schools is over 7000.
A snapshot of one school profile includes: 35% coming from broken homes, 5% living on their own and 35% actively involved in English as a second language. The school currently supports between 80 and 100 students who have combined family incomes of less than $18 000. Unfortunately, this profile is not uncommon in many of the compensatory education schools.
The ‘Dogs Breakfast Program will allow students to start the day with a healthy and nutritious breakfast which will make it easier for students to focus on learning.
